You're not looking at the details. Can't ignore the need for a forward link. Apple has the use of a 3G network and can't say AT&T is delighted with it. Need something else, something better, something separate. A new network needs spectrum and nationwide deployment of transmission towers. It has to be the right kind of spectrum. Has to be low frequency (under a ghz) to receive indoors or in-vehicle. Not available unless you buy a TV channel license? Licensing a public spectrum resource in secret, even for Apple, is impossible because it is against federal law. Bonus points if you need the same spectrum in all major markets, as Qualcomm has assembled. The value of the asset they have created should not be discounted.
