The XTO shareholders are unhappy even though it was at a premium. There was a secondary offering higher than the take-out price. XOM shareholders are unhappy at the immediate dilution. That being said, efficient market sentiment is negative on both sides so probably a fair and good deal if the promised synergies come through. If natural gas really does become the fuel of the future, given its relative "cleaness" compared to oil and coal, then it's a great deal for XOM. Coal is dead under Obama. XOM probably dead money for the next month given tax and end of year re-shuffling. Next year, look for XOM to hit prior highs IMO. I'm hoping that XOM falls a bit more as it may be the best chance to add here.
