My nephew, 2nd year college, just got a Netbook, and comparing it to my Core 2 notebook, it does 'routine' stuff about half as fast. He got it mostly because a lot of his friends had them, and they are just right for slinging into a backpack with a bunch of books. He thinks it works for most things - plenty of battery for a full day of classes, runs all the things he needs in that environment, and so far tough enough to survive. He doesn't think the performance is a problem at all. He has a cheap desktop in his dorm for his more intensive internet and entertainment after hours.
