The Intel deal with TSMC looks to me like an offensive play to move into mobile - MID with an offering which has the low power characteristics of ARM, and x86 programming model. That would incidentally blunt ARM's recent moves to move upstream. It also allows Intel to more effectively target Atom at specific markets through added features, without all of the IP and other issues if they tried to do that directly.

A possible secondary play is to give TSMC an alternative path if AMD moves GPU production to TFC.

This seems to me to be a very smart move for Intel, for a number of reasons.
