With or without the match, the military has a great retirement system. Yes, a match would be nice, but keep in mind that on top of the 15,500 you can put in your TSP annually, you are also allowed to max out a Roth, (5,000 this year), and are building toward a retirement at 20 years. (If you're in a combat zone you can put away 43,000 tax free into your TSP annually).
The TSP does offer some flexibility, you can go bonds, SP500, INTL Stocks, or some sort of a blend depending on when you want to take your money out. If one gets out of the military early, they can roll this TSP into a roth or regular IRA.
The military has been ridden hard and put away wet these past few years, but in the long run offers some good benefits.
Their new education program offers three years of college at a max rate equal to the highest State school rate. It applies to you, your spouse, or children.
