South Korea DRAM makers using discounted won to extend aggressive pricing, say Taiwan rivals

Buoyed by the depreciation of the South Korean won, DRAM makers in South Korea have continued to apply aggressive pricing strategies in the market despite the current weak market conditions for memory, according to sources at Taiwan DRAM makers.

South Korea DRAM makers appear to have gained an upper hand against rivals in Taiwan as the Korean won has depreciated over 40% against the US dollar since the beginning of this year, while the Taiwan dollar (NT$) has depreciated only single digit percentage points, the sources noted.

The aggressive pricing strategies implemented by South Korea makers have also undermined efforts by rivals in Taiwan and Japan to help stabilize market conditions through production cutbacks, the sources stated.

Although mainstream DDR2 1Gb eTT (effective tested) DRAM chips were quoted slightly above US$1 on the spot market last week, some DRAM vendor were actually trading the parts below US$1, the sources pointed out.
