|Interesting that 65nm Quad Core Opteron at 1.9ghz is 45w while 45nm Quad Core Xeon is 65w at 1.86ghz.|
And Opteron includes the power used by the memory controller, so it's actually more like 70 to 75w Intel vs. 45w AMD.
Maybe SOI isn't so bad, after all...
All that highK/metal gate/double patterning 45nm stuff doesn't seem to be doing much to reduce power consumption, does it?
When you start talking clusters of 10,000 CPUs, using 1/3 less power can become a pretty big deal.
And AMD has done early sampling of 45nm parts. But I'm not going to guess at the date for commercial availability...
Any word on 32nm from Intel? Cause Intel's 45nm blows a lot more watts than AMD's 65 - and that's becoming a big issue, these days.
