"Now the IBM units we have have one HW config and one Sw config."

Your IBM example describes a walled garden. Only chink in that armor would be hardware failures or a well-crafted virus.

Your enthusiasm for this is well regarded because you don't allow consumers to deviate from that one HW config and SW config (classic definition of a single config.)

If you applied the same single-config constraints to a horde of Dell machines, what would happen?

Verizon wouldn't control the software it if it didn't solve their problem. I don't think anyone wants to download a map program and have it causes customers to be familiar with the "iPhone brick" phenomenon.

"general blanket statements wihtout understand the problems is pretty poor stuff"

Uh, ok.

"And Direct TV is a peice of crap, even today with their HDTV line. They have 5 models out there, The GUIS are NOT the same and the internal Sw is way differnt. One will run windows media player 11 stuff and one won't."

You're the first person I've ever heard of who uses that.

From a menu and remote control point, the software is the same on their current offerings because their chief of development stood before me at two different AV conventions and told me it was their intent. They can't compete with CATV providers on monthly billings if they keep spending $billions on phone support.

D10, D11, and D12. The remotes and menus are the same. Same IR codes. HR20, HR21 same with HD.

All three available remotes work on all five MPEG4-capable receivers, which are the only kind of receivers available for purchase or lease.

If you find a model that is significantly different, that box is no longer sold by DirecTV retailers and does not support the new MPEG4 data streams or the new 5-horn LNB.
