Good test, thanks for posting.

The reputation that NEFs or RAW files are superior to JPEGs with regard to their ability to save otherwise ruined images is an undeserved reputation.

Most statements in favor of RAW aren't that dramatic. Some objects where I found recoverability in RAW files: detail in white feathers or clouds, lamp posts or antennae against a bright sky. If they are gone in JPG I have a good chance of recovering them in RAW. (I always use dual RAW/JPG saving.)
