ASHBURN, Va., Sep 18, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Xacta(R) Corporation is turning entire aircraft maintenance ramps
and hangars into secure wireless LAN "hotspots" powered by solar
energy sources at bases where power is a scarce or non-existent
Xacta, through its parent company Telos Corporation, was awarded a
$3.34 million task order by United States Central Command Air Forces
to install solar power to support wireless LAN nodes within USCENTAF
Area of Responsibility. The wireless connections improve the way
maintenance and logistics personnel maintain aircrafts, allowing them
to access and update aircraft maintenance data in real time, right
from the aircraft.
"Working in theater always involves obstacles, and addressing
those challenges requires creativity," said Brendan Malloy, senior
vice president of Secure Networks with Xacta, a Telos company. "In
this case, those challenges include remote locations and extremely
harsh weather conditions."
The wireless LANs require the installation of multiple radio units
throughout the maintenance areas and inside hangars. Among the extreme
conditions in which the networks are deployed are temperatures
reaching over 120(degree) F (49(degree) C) and blowing dust. The radio
units require weather-sealed, air-conditioned enclosures, increasing
the power requirements over those of a typical wireless LAN.
"We worked with the Air Force to adapt and overcome," Malloy
continued. "By using solar power as the power source for our wireless
networks, we are helping facilitate vital communications on aircraft
data in even the most far-flung locations amid the harshest
conditions." Today Xacta Secure Networks solutions enable Air Force
personnel to have network access at remote locations across Southwest
Asia and beyond.
