I have had an experience where I initially placed a market order
with E*trade and then changed my mind and cancelled the order.
Although E*trade tells me that market orders cannot be cancelled
or changed, mine did actually cancel.

I got a confirmation back on the cancellation and was true.

I would never risk this again though. My feeling is that market
orders, once placed, are permanent until execution and MMs have
their own time and price at which they buy or sell the trade.
