Peregrine Shares Rise After Tests Show Drug Stops Bird Flu Virus Replication

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) -- Shares of Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. jumped in premarket activity Wednesday after the biotech drug developer said early tests of its anti-viral compounds on chicken eggs showed promise in stopping a strain of bird flu from making copies of itself.
Peregrine shares rose 18 cents, or 12.8 percent, to $1.59 in premarket trading.

The company said it used bavituximab, formerly known as Tarvacin, to completely halt replication of a strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus in fertilized chicken eggs.

Peregrine said it plans to collect more preclinical data to support the start of clinical trials next month.
