For completely erasing and cleaning drives, I can recommend

killdisk.com 

Make a floppy with the software (free), boot your computer,
and clean/erase all, including the OS. I have used it when returning company owned computers to insure that any personal information could never, ever, be recovered. It also applies when junking old computers or donating them.
