Two more people may have bird flu: Minister

thejakartapost.com

JAKARTA (Antara): Two more people are suspected to have been infected with the deadly bird flu virus, Minister of Health Siti Fadilah Supari said on Tuesday.

"Yes, there are two more people, with one suspected case an employee of Jakarta's Ragunan Zoo while the other is a vendor at the zoo," Siti said.

The minister said that as of Tuesday, there had been six people admitted to Sulianti Saroso Hospital in North Jakarta. Two of them earlier tested positive for the virus. Blood samples from the other patients have been sent to a Hong Kong laboratory.

The government decided to close the zoo on Monday for the next three weeks after some 19 birds tested positive for the virus.

On Monday the government declared the outbreak in the country was an "extraordinary" situation.

It confirmed last week that the 37-year-old Rini Dina, who lived near a chicken slaughterhouse in a South Jakarta suburb, was the fourth human fatality linked to bird flu in the country.

In July, Indonesia became the fourth country in Asia to record human cases of the disease when a man and his two daughters died after contracting bird flu. (*)
