And the user should decide whether or not to run their anti-virus program all the time in the background or just run it when doing a manual sweep. In other words note system performance in each case...

But suppose the user decides not to subscribe to virus updates...In that case after each day of internet connections click Start, click Search, click Files-or-Folders, click When-was-it-modified-?, check Specify-Dates, and click Search. Now look for suspicious or unknown files. If a funny file is found then check its properties against computer manufacture date and against software installation dates. Finally, if a virus is found then search for information about it on a web search engine. Don't worry about Prefetch PF files in themselves as that is a restore utility...but a previously missed file might be seen within the prefetch structure.
