Actually the way such a system would work is how they already do it in Japan: the phone uses its built in camera to take a picture of the barcode (in Japan they have fully 2-D barcodes that contain tons more info) and software in the phone examines the picture to read the barcode. Once it has decoded the barcode it can use it to comparison shop.

The only real magic here is using a camera to scan a barcode instead of a laser. No RFIDs involved in this process.
