Lizzie - I beg to differ on HP. They have quietly been buying up early stage technology at some pretty steep prices, and the pieces all seem to fill in deep capability for enterprise provisioning. Basically all of the really cool stuff I know about in that line was picked up by HP as soon as it got past proof of concept. They have to have a lot of folks who really understand the space just to know about some of those companies. And I don't think they are shotgunning.

Some of those products will take years to mature and hit the street in the form of 'adaptive enterprise' capability, but I am much more impressed by their moves than what I have seen from IBM, which is as far as I can tell shilling services with some cobbled together management techniques out of the last century (well out of the 90's, but I like a little dramatic rhetoric).
