I was using the definition of "monetize" as "To establish as legal tender". Of course, one may question the term "legal tender", but "Legally valid currency that may be offered in payment of a debt and that a creditor must accept" works for me. In that context, I consider my statement accurate.

Bob's statement was a result of being a coin collector, who tends to make the distinction between coins and medals. Governments mint coins (monetized legal tender), while other entities mint medals, regardless of their metal composition. Either one can be money, if you get another person to accept it as such, otherwise you just recycle it as scrap metal at spot.

Then again, I still get peeved by folks talking about "pennies" when there is no such denomination issued by the US Mint (just cents)

P.S. The silver folks are going to get pissed if we keep going off topic.
