WiFi setup
I have a wifi LAN at home and have used wifi at starbucks and a number of free hotspots, and it's really easy to set up (its even easier with my new centrino laptop). Most hotspots do not use WEP security, so it's just a matter of turning my computer on and then selecting the network from the drop down menu on my wifi adapter software utility (with the centrino, even that last step is automatic). For the free hotspots, that's it, you're on the network. For the paid services, then the first time you fire up your web browser, the web page that loads is an authentication page, where you login with your t-mobile account. Once logged in, then you are free to surf the web, check email, at your leisure. I think it's great, and it definitely affects my choice of coffee providers. But to answer your question directly, my master's degree has nothing to do with computer setup, so no, its not true <g>.
As a related note, I've managed to hook up my 1X phone to my laptop with ease as well, but it's much slower than most high speed broadband networks. I use it (rarely) when I don't want to pay hotel fees for internet access. |
