You're correct, there is plenty of advertising. Not only the billboards and probably some tv commercials, but the usual blitz of print ads. Let's see, I got two magazines today. There's the inside cover two-page spread in Sports Illustrated. And let's see--same thing in the New Yorker as it has been in past weeks? Nope. Apple settled for the back cover instead.

Given supply constraints it would've been better for Apple to not be running as many ads.

Not sure how much quid pro quo was necessary for the Time cover though. An exclusive was probably enough--plus Time probably noted that the last time Jobs was on the cover it sold well. That's all it takes. Btw, the recent Esquire sales record was the cover that had Madonna on the cover wearing a dog collar, with interview by Norman Mailer.
