James I live in the Middle East, although a very nice part of it where our quality of life is beyond our means. I came out here on a two year contract in 1993 from Florida thinking, I will bank the money and go back. Just recently with my wife's blessing decided that we have decided to stay here until 2006 if they will have us. Having read your post, I think you underestimate what you are dealing with. There is a lot of resentment in this whole region by the average person towards the US government and its policies. We regularly get notice from the embassy to be careful however on the surface I can't for a minute imagine there is any danger( feel more at risk when I travel back to the states for vacations or work).
I personally think bombing the Afghanis will achieve nothing as they will sit in the mountains and wait it out. They are a very war hardened nation and used to it. It will only add fuel to the fire. The sad part of all of this is Bin Laden was CIA's man during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Pakistan is a rogue nation involved in drug and money laundering like no other nation on earth however the US has supported it for years and the Taliban is a Pakistani institution.

I can't see ground forces in Afghanistan as even bush has got to be smarter than that.
