To be charitable. Unfortunately the patent office will allow things to be patented that are perfectly obvious to "someone skilled in the field". I admit that I have not gone over the patents exhaustively, but from the parts that I have seen, Rambus should not have a chance. To some extent, I guess the industry set themselves up for this. The use of trivial and likely unenforceable patents to leverage certain licensing deals is very common and used to keep new players out. Now they have this piranha cruising around that is trying to use their own game against them...
