Hi Joan, good to see you posting again, though of course the sucking business sort of, er, sucks sometimes, as you've seen on the "annex".
There's many things I might want to bring up with you, but I'll lead with one non-controversial bit. Have you ever heard of the book "The Long Walk", by Slavomir Rawicz? I read it recently, it's a quite gripping tale of an escape from the Gulag. Rather fantastic, in fact. It seems to be an obscure cold war relic of sorts, I can't quite figure if it's genuine or if it's a propaganda plant in the spirit of Dr. Tom Dooley in the "Quiet American" era. The Gulag bits seem plausible enough, but the escape parts are a little wild. You can read a bit about it at amazon.com  . Did it ever come up in your Soviet days?
