Not sure all hopes lie with OS X. A few neat product initiatives that could be inviting to consumers in 2001:

* A strong CD-RW initiative, possibly enhanced by software, to make producing audio CDs very easy. Hey, why not use iMovie to produce Video CDs (which work in most DVD players!)

* A resurgent G3-based product line taking the G3 above 1GHz

* A truly new form factor for the iMac.

The current cash flow story looks ugly. Hopefully, Apple is taking the hit in net income to avoid a truly poor free cash flow performance. 11 Weeks of inventory is almost a quarters worth, hence the exceptional revenue miss.

Maybe I'll have time to rerun five year projections and free cash flows to see what a ballpark valuation for Apple should be here. However, it just goes to show the markets aren't that irrational: the pricing of Apple so closely to cash value clearly pointed to the fact that Apple's cash position was expected to weaken, possibly significantly, in the near future.
