LU has had every banker on wall street in pitching this spin-off.

Pros: Each piece achieves better focus, shareholders have stocks that are easier to analyze and compare, and most importantly, Equipment competitors may be more willing to partner with ME if it is not tied to a fierce rival.

Cons: Bell Labs research is leveraged into both equipment and ME - spinning out ME means breaking up the Labs.

This is being debated within LU, but since McGinn is on vacation until the end of next week, there will be no action for a while.
