Thread: Does anyone have insights on a still private company called Equinix. It also sets up internet hosting data centers but claims that its approach is different from others like Exodus in the following ways. It locates its data centers on the backbone of the big I and houses equipment for multiple bandwidth services companies like Worldcom, Quest, AT@T etc. Then hosted customers can choose from any of these service providers and switch from one to the other with relative ease all inside the same facility. ISPs locate in the centers as well due the direct connection to high bandwidth backbones. The final difference is very heavy emphasis on data security and physical security of the data centers--man traps, handprint recognition systems, barriers outside buildings, bulletproof glass, and surveillance of everyone inside the building at all times. They were number two in Forbe's recent best high tech ideas list. Have raised about $200 million in funding from some big companies as well as individuals--Cisco, Microsoft, AOL, Marc Andreesen. Does anyone know enough to compare/contrast Equinix and Exodus' business models?
