"What do you think about the speed concerns that have been raised here recently?"

MOT needs a good whipping. Hector Ruiz (former president of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector) certainly gave the impression that he was spending more time courting AMD-- paving his way for a new job-- than he was fixing MOT's manufacturing/design problems.

Having said that, most of the really nasty stuff regarding G4 are actually coming out of the IBM camp. While MOT and IBM are partners in the PowerPC projects they are still fierce competitors.

From what I've heard, two revision to the G4 are planned. The first revision is suppose to add on chip L2 cache. The second revision will involved implementing deeper pipelining... this may take a lot longer.

If the current speed constrain is due to an errata, it can be fixed in the first revision and we should see some modest speed improvement following the release of chips based on that revision. The real improvement (in terms of MHz) won't come until the deeper pipeline is added.

In the meantime, expect a minor speed bump for the G4 shortly after the announcement of Pismo.
